Unlocking Trauma Recovery with Resilience Coaching
Trauma can cast a long shadow on our lives, affecting how we perceive and respond to the world around us. My resilience coaching approach is uniquely well-suited for trauma recovery, and I’d like to explain why.
Trauma often isn’t just a one-time event; it’s an experience that can shape our nervous system, affecting our responses to future situations. Often, trauma becomes embedded in our attachment states and strategies — our ways of connecting with others and the world. Healing from trauma requires a compassionate and holistic approach that goes beyond traditional therapy.
Working with Attachment States and Strategies
In my resilience coaching, as well as presencing facilitation, I place a significant emphasis on understanding and working with attachment states and strategies. These are the patterns of relating that often stem from early life experiences and shape our connections with others. By exploring these patterns, we can unravel the roots of trauma and gently rewire our attachment responses.
Through a blend of somatic exercises and facilitation skills, I guide my clients in:
- Exploring Attachment Strategies: We delve into the various attachment styles, such as anxious, avoidant, or disorganized, but as dynamic and shifting strategies that get employed in different relationships and constellations, for different reasons, and at different times! Attachment states are not fixed and this shift in understanding helps to identify how they manifest in daily life.
- Nurturing Secure Attachment: I help clients develop a secure attachment within themselves. This means learning to provide the care, comfort, and safety they may have missed in their early relationships. It’s a journey towards becoming your own secure base.
- Reconnecting with Others: Healing from trauma doesn’t mean isolating oneself. It’s about relearning how to trust, connect, and engage with others in a healthy and fulfilling way. We work on building healthier relationship dynamics.
Anchoring to States of Wellbeing
Recovery from trauma isn’t just about addressing pain and distress; it’s also about nurturing moments of peace and wellbeing. I teach my clients to anchor to and rest in states of wellbeing as an essential part of their healing journey.
We work together to:
- Identify Wellbeing States: We explore moments in life when you felt safe, content, and at ease. These can be small, everyday experiences or significant milestones. Recognizing these moments is crucial.
- Cultivate Presence: Through mindfulness and somatic practices, I help clients become more present in their bodies. This presence allows you to fully experience and savour moments of wellbeing when they arise.
- Create Inner Resources: We work on developing a toolbox of inner resources that you can tap into during challenging times. These resources become your anchors, providing stability and comfort.
Cultivating Self-Efficacy
In addition to understanding attachment and anchoring to wellbeing, resilience coaching places a strong emphasis on cultivating self-efficacy — a belief in your ability to navigate life’s challenges and create positive change. Self-efficacy is a powerful force, especially in trauma recovery.
Here’s how we work on self-efficacy together:
- Setting Achievable Goals: We collaborate to define realistic, attainable goals that align with your values and aspirations. We titrate (taking slow and gradual steps that feel manageable and generative) toward these goals, incrementally boosting your confidence and sense of agency.
- Developing Problem-Solving Skills: I empower you with problem-solving skills to tackle obstacles and setbacks effectively. You’ll learn to approach challenges with resilience and adaptability.
- Celebrating Successes: Acknowledging and celebrating your accomplishments, no matter how small, reinforces your belief in your own capabilities. Self-efficacy grows as you recognize your progress.
In summary, resilience coaching is a powerful approach for trauma recovery because it addresses not only the pain and distress but also the deep-seated patterns of attachment, offers tools to anchor in states of wellbeing, and cultivates self-efficacy. My coaching journey with you is a collaborative and transformative process, guiding you towards healing, growth, and a brighter future. Together, we can unlock your path to recovery and empower you to take charge of your life.
